It's part of the territory, but I agree, pisses me off too...not very hard to click the 'Thanks' button.
I'd eventually like to implement a hack/mod that allows those who upload to specify how many thanks/comments/posts members need before they are allowed to download/view the attachment.

Maybe not for pics but for let's say a video or a torrent, to require the person to click 'Thanks' before they download it wouldn't be too much to ask...

Okay, so let's say you limit viewing attachments to members with 50 posts. You think that's going to increase the number of people who contribute quality stuff to the board? I doubt it. One of two things is going to happen. One, you'll get a lot of people who register, realize they still can't see shit and then don't bother to come back (and never post any of the stuff they may have burning a hole in their harddrives) or two, you'll get a lot of people posting a whole lot of inane bullshit just so they can build up enough posts to see the attachments (spammety, spam, spam, spam). Either way, TNB loses.
If someone comes here and wants to contribute they will, if not, they won't. Having a whole lot of requirements just to see the pics isn't going to all of the sudden turn 6000+ lurkers into upstanding contributing members of the community.
BTW, the way to do it if you're going to do it (and if it can be done, I have no idea what kind of hack are out there for this kind of board) would be to grant privileges by the number of times a user has been thanked, rather than the number of times that user has thanked others. That way you're rewarding users who post quality content over ones who simply click thanks on random posts just to gain access to goodies. Anyone can just thank every post he reads just to build up points, but you've got to contribute something to get other users to thank you.

That isn't how the modification would work...what I meant was for example before they can download a torrent or video they have to click 'thanks'...that's super easy :)

yup, that's a good idea too, and would probably be the best way to do it

that's great, xxx! :) too bad lurkers don't know what they're missing by not joining in! just a positive reply or thanks to your favorite poster once in a while, makes him/her feel appreciated and want to post again! not everyone's gonna post pics, i get that, but anyone can be a fan and say thanks!

ha, you should feel part of the fam...the logo you made is viewed 800,000 - 1,000,000 times a day :D (no exaggeration, that's how many pageviews we average daily)

Actually I take that back, I didn't take into consideration that when a pic is viewed there's no logo...so we'll say 1/2 - 1/3 of the time your logo is viewed.

Okay ... opinion time for me too :)
I'm not that strong on this point as BLMac, but there is one point that irritates me. What I don't understand is those who just ask for more, but don't click on thank you first (or after). If you want more, I think it is save to asume that you liked the post and if you liked the post saying 'thanks' is obvious the right thing to do.

How about we just have the chat section available to people who lurk/don't post on here to see. How about after XXX posts, you get the opportunity to check out the videos and pics.
I think the picture and video sections should be a priviledge to the people who do contribute (Add comments and other things) to the forum.
